UK Green Party Drops Longstanding Opposition to Nuclear Power in Policy Shift
Green party members in England and Wales voted to end absolute opposition to nuclear fission, shifting towards evaluating nuclear projects alongside other low-carbon technologies.
In a major strategic evolution in energy policy, members of the Green party of England and Wales have voted to drop their longstanding commitment to phasing out nuclear technology. The newly adopted motion removes blanket opposition to nuclear fission, allowing the party to assess nuclear projects alongside alternative low-carbon solutions during the ongoing transition.
While the core generation strategy continues to prioritize offshore wind, onshore wind, and rooftop solar as primary electricity sources, elected representatives are now permitted to support new nuclear reactors on a case-by-case basis. Co-leader Carla Denyer noted that the decision acknowledges the current existence and utility of nuclear power while the nation builds out a grid powered primarily by renewables.
