Reddit Shifts to Logged-In Experience as Search Traffic Declines

Facing a decline in traditional search traffic driven by the rise of AI search engines, Reddit announced a transition to a primarily logged-in experience to protect its data and fuel licensing deals.

The widespread shift toward AI-powered search has fundamentally altered web traffic patterns, prompting major digital platforms to rethink their open-internet strategies. Long known for attracting users via search engines where people appended site names for authentic answers, the platform revealed a major pivot during its third-quarter earnings call.

The company is transitioning to a primarily "logged-in experience" to safeguard its proprietary data from aggressive AI scraping while positioning itself for lucrative data-licensing agreements with model providers. This structural change also aims to counteract daily active user declines in its primary U.S. market—dropping from 53.2 million in Q2 to 50.7 million in Q3—while global daily active users held flat at 130.3 million.
