OpenAI Steps Back From NDAs in Data Center Projects and Commits to Local Transparency

Following public pushback over data center expansion, OpenAI announced new community commitments pledging to eliminate NDAs with public officials and cover full energy costs.

In response to growing public scrutiny surrounding massive infrastructure footprints, OpenAI has announced a sweeping policy shift regarding its data center development projects. The ChatGPT maker confirmed it will no longer utilize non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with public officials in communities where it operates.

Under the updated framework, NDAs will be strictly limited to narrow protections covering essential trade secrets, national security info, or sensitive competitive data. Additionally, OpenAI pledged to shoulder the full financial cost of the electricity its facilities consume and cover associated infrastructure enhancements. The move marks a significant cultural adjustment for hyperscalers aiming to rebuild public trust at the local level.
