NASA's Iconic 'Flying Bedstead' LLRV Conducted Its First Test Flight

The unorthodox four-legged lunar landing research vehicle prepared Apollo astronauts for humanity's first steps on the moon.

Designed to simulate lunar landings and takeoffs under Earth's gravity, NASA's Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV)—affectionately dubbed the 'Flying Bedstead'—completed its maiden test flight. Piloted initially by X-15 aviator Joe Walker, the contraption hovered at roughly 10 feet for a minute during its inaugural trials.

Completing over 30 test flights at the facility later renamed after Neil Armstrong, the LLRV served as an indispensable training tool for the Apollo 11 crew.
