Drone Warfare in Orbit: Autonomous Laser Cubesats to Protect Western Satellites
Following aggressive maneuvers by Russian military satellites near private radar units, UK startup Shield Space is developing swarms of 100 autonomous laser cubesats for orbital defense.
Geopolitical tensions in low-Earth orbit are accelerating the development of autonomous defense mechanisms for space assets. Recent incidents involving Russian military satellites passing within 500 meters of the ICEYE-X36 radar satellite—which provides critical battlefield intelligence—have underscored major vulnerabilities to signal jamming, blinding, and harassment.
In response, U.K. startup Shield Space is adapting battlefield drone tactics from terrestrial conflicts to space. The company aims to deploy a swarm of up to 100 low-cost, attritable, laser-shooting cubesats on a protect-and-defend mission for under £100 million, shifting the paradigm of asset protection in orbit.
