AI Data Centers Turn to Converted Retired Aircraft Jet Engines to Bypass Power Grid Delays

Stuck in multi-year waiting lines for utility grid connections, artificial intelligence data center operators are deploying rebuilt jet engines fueled by natural gas for rapid on-site power generation.

The unprecedented scale of the artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout has drastically outpaced global power grid capacities. Faced with years-long queues for grid interconnects and transformer deliveries, data center operators are increasingly turning to unconventional power sources, including converted jet engines salvaged from retired aircraft.

Rebuilt to burn natural gas, these mobile turbine units provide a rapid-deployment alternative to permanent power plants. While not designed as long-term solutions, they allow operators to bypass grid bottlenecks and bring heavy computing facilities online in as little as 24 months compared to traditional multi-year utility wait times.
